Our climate controlled facility boasts 27,000 square feet, with ample manufacturing space and warehousing room. We boast 20 CNC mills and lathes, several hoists, an overhead bridge crane system with two rails, and an inspection room with two CMM stations.

Family owned and operated, this small machine shop located in Northeast Iowa is coming out of the latest Ag downturn stronger than before.

Monona, June 5, 2017-Candace Drahn and Casey Drahn co-owners of family business, M’s Machine & Mfg., were given the opportunity to show their business to Anchor, Chris Earl. The morning Anchor for KCRG TV9 contacted the company to be featured in his “Made in Eastern Iowa” segment.

During the visit Candace and Casey were able to discuss a couple of topics currently challenging their business. Finding quality employees now and in the future and their recent struggles with the downturn in the Ag sector. As well as exciting advances in technology which has changed the way they do business.

Much like other manufacturers in Northeast Iowa, M’s Machine’s business is predominately Ag related. When the Ag sector takes a hit so does their business. Candace tells Chris about recent goals to better diversify their customer base which has allowed the company to come out of the latest Ag downturn stronger than before. It was not long before the company saw the shift of needing more business to needing more employees.

Finding quality employees in a small community with low unemployment is tough. Therefore, management at M’s Machine realizes the importance of educating people about manufacturing today and careers available within this sector. They do this by holding an MFG Day event and by working with local high schools and area community colleges. The company allows interested students an opportunity to job shadow at their facility. All of which is designed to enlighten the community about manufacturing jobs today.

Jobs in manufacturing are not the same now as they were 20 years ago. Facilities are clean and full of ever-changing technology which continuously enhances the way company’s like M’s Machine does business.

M’s Machine & Manufacturing is set to hosts its 4th Annual MFG Day Event on October 4th, 2018, in conjunction with Mobile Track Solutions out of Elkader. The two businesses will welcome almost 200 students from eight different area schools, including: MFL MarMac, Central, Cresco, South Winn, Starmont, Turkey Valley, Waukon and West Central. Students will be given a one hour tour at both companies. They will see various demonstrations, like CNC machining, plasma cutting, welding, and painting, as well as receive hands on experience with various types of measurement equipment.

The MFG Day celebration was put into place to encourage Manufacturers across the nation to open its doors in order to open the minds of others. Jobs in manufacturing are not the same now as they were 20 years ago. Facilities are clean and full of ever-changing technology which continuously enhances the way company’s like M’s Machine does business.

M’s Machine’s theme this year is “What Path Will You Take?” There is an array of job opportunities within manufacturing industries. Some that require 0-2 years of post- secondary education and others that require 4 or more years of education. The company will talk about the different journeys of their own employees and fellow business partners in order to open the minds of the visiting students.

Like several area manufacturers M’s Machine & Mfg. is currently looking to hire. It is expected over the next 5-7 years that 3.5 million jobs will open in manufacturing but only 1.5 million jobs will be filled. It is important that manufacturers get creative with technology and educating people on the possibilities within the industry in hopes of filling this gap.
